Origins

The early history of Toto, which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured goods to meet the demand for modern, new urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company established the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other manufacturers' products in order to expand its range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.

In the 90s, Toto began focusing on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to supply chain management, and it used the same approach for its sales process. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction with the customer.

They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a fairly straightforward rock band. The band began as a four-piece and released two albums: 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its share of problems. The record companies put the band under pressure to release the top single or they would rescind them. Luckily for Toto, they did with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experiences. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and could sound totally wrong, but works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour to help promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
